Film as Spiritual Journey
Films can help us get in touch with where we are on our journeys of faith and where we want to be. Something happens
to us as we watch a film because . . .
- films are spiritual guides to life
- films teach and reinforce lasting spiritual truths
- films provide lessons of what it means to be a person
- the best films reveal the best qualities of our own heart
- films can be a safe place to get in touch with our shadow side
Films such as The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Star Wars, and, most recently, The Lord of Rings Trilogy
demonstrate outwardly our inner spiritual experiences.
The Virtues in Color and Black & White
Spiritually is being expressed and deepened in various new ways.
What does redemption, compassion, peace and justice, faith, hope, and love look like on
the screen?
Films such as Radio, Whale Rider, Shrek, Hotel Rwanda, and With Honors, to name just a few, demonstrate
virtues through a contemporary and very popular medium. If we can recognize them in film we can recognize them
in life.

What about adults?
Ministering with Movies is not only for the young. Faith formation is a life-long process and people of
all ages desire and deserve the benefits from a ministry such as this. Of course, appropriate films are not only chosen
based on the topic, but also on the age group participating in the program. Films such as The African Queen,
Gone with the Wind, It's a Wonderful Life, The Mission, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, and Chocolat are
used to demonstrate spiritual principals on a more mature level.
Intergenerational workshops have also been very successful, Rabbit Proof Fence, Little Women,
Thirteen and Joy Luck Club were used in a mother/daughter retreat affording mothers the opportunity to talk
with and better understand their daughters and daughters the opportunity to view 'motherhood' from a different perspective.
